In 2024, I became curious about the challenges young people face in achieving their promising potential. To explore this further, I conducted a survey that received responses from nearly 200 individuals across four African countries. The results were clear—fresh graduates, mostly unemployed or self-employed, were passionate about making an impact. However, many felt stuck and in need of good mentorship to scale up their efforts.
I discussed this concern with colleagues and mentors, and after much consultation, it became evident that bridging this gap was relevant. Despite the much hesitation, my mind was made up. Gratefully, we designed the Greener Future Workshop—a platform to mentor young Africans on self-discovery, leadership and career growth.
The workshop took place from January 23rd to 25th, 2025, hosting 20 selected participants out of a competitive pool of nearly 500 applicants from nine African countries. Balancing this initiative with my academic responsibilities was demanding—I often stayed late at the university to ensure everything ran smoothly, even when I had pressing deadlines.
We were privileged to have six outstanding mentors, each with firsthand experience of starting from scratch and building a fulfilling career and impactful life. Every mentee had individual sessions with each mentor, and the insights shared were truly transformative.
Some key takeaways from the mentors included the significance of volunteering, the power of moving firmly even when you aren’t sure about the final destination, supporting other people especially those who played key roles in our lives, and self evaluation. I can’t wait to see their positive transformations in the coming years.
More than 90% of participants found the workshop useful and relevant to their lives. The success of this workshop has reinforced my commitment to making it an annual event, empowering the next generation of prepared African youth to unlock their full potential for career growth and impact. Looking ahead, I hope to expand its reach across the continent in the coming years.
I sincerely appreciate our mentors for taking the time, despite their busy schedules, to share their knowledge and experiences with the next generation of changemakers.
Congratulations to the fully transformed participants! You did not receive a certificate for attending a workshop, instead you’ve gained master lessons and life principles that drive success, impact, and growth. Leverage this knowledge and pay it forward!
